Indoor vs Outdoor LED Screens: What Is the Difference?
Indoor and outdoor LED walls look similar, but they are built differently. Brightness, weather rating, pixel pitch, and rigging all change based on where the screen lives. Here is what sets them apart.
Outdoor screens are far brighter
Outdoor panels need to compete with the sun, so they run at much higher brightness than indoor screens. Indoor panels are tuned to look right under house lights without being harsh. Putting an indoor screen outside in daylight would leave it washed out and hard to read.
Outdoor walls are sealed against the elements
Outdoor LED cabinets are sealed and weather-rated to handle rain, dust, and temperature swings. Indoor panels are not built for that exposure. For any event under open sky, you need outdoor-rated panels, which we rig and protect for the conditions on site.
Indoor is usually viewed closer
Indoor audiences tend to sit closer, so indoor walls often use a tighter pixel pitch for sharp detail. Outdoor crowds usually view from farther away, so a wider pitch works well and keeps cost down. Our pixel pitch guide goes deeper.
Outdoor needs sturdier support
Outdoor walls face wind and need ground support or structures engineered for outdoor loads, plus power planning for sites where power is not nearby. Indoor installs are usually simpler. We scope the rigging and power for your specific venue so the wall is safe and reliable.
Outdoor costs more for the same size
Because outdoor walls need higher brightness, sealed cabinets, and sturdier rigging, they cost more than a comparable indoor setup. That is normal, and we size the wall so you are paying for what your event actually needs. See the cost and sizing guide.
Questions, answered
Can I use an indoor LED screen outside?
No. Indoor panels are not bright enough for daylight and are not weather-rated. For outdoor events you need outdoor-rated, high-brightness panels.
Are outdoor LED screens waterproof?
Outdoor panels use sealed, weather-rated cabinets built to handle rain, dust, and temperature swings, and we rig and protect the system for the conditions on site.
Why do outdoor LED walls cost more?
They need higher brightness, sealed weather-rated cabinets, and sturdier rigging than indoor screens, which raises the price for a comparable size.
